Frederick S. Berg, PhD

Frederick S. Berg is a Professor Emeritus of the Department of Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education at Utah State University. He has been an oral teacher of the deaf, a public school speech therapist, a hearing clinician, a college teacher, and a program coordinator, developer, and evaluator. He trained as an electronic technician at the Naval Research Laboratory, as a teacher of the deaf at Central Institute for the Deaf, and as a speech pathologist and audiologist at Southern Illinois University, where he received his Ph.D. He has played a major role in developing educational audiology courses and establishing the field of Educational Audiology, specializing in speech, listening, room acoustics, and FM technologies. He is a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, a member of the Educational Audiology Association, and has been a member of the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf, the Academy of Rehabilitative Audiology, the National Sound and Communication Association, and the National Cued Speech Association. A recipient of numerous grants from the U.S. Department of Education, Dr. Berg has developed extensive curricular and instructional products, including books, videotapes, scientific exhibits, courses, home study materials, and speech technology for the Vocal Scope. While serving as a humanitarian missionary at the Ali Yavar Jung National Institute for the Hearing Handicapped in India, he taught educational audiology, Cued Speech, helped young deaf children develop speech, and he and his wife developed speech books in English and Telugu.
