Richard V. Smith, M.D., F.A.C.S., is Associate Professor and Vice-Chairman, Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center.

A New York native, Dr. Smith received his undergraduate training at Middlebury College, in Vermont and graduated from the University of Vermont College of Medicine in 1990, followed by training in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Georgetown Hospital and School of Medicine in Washington, DC. Following his residency, he joined the faculty of the Department of Otolaryngology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine where he has served as the Chief of the Division of Otolaryngology at the North Central Bronx Hospital, Co-Director of the Head and Neck Service at Montefiore, serving as Director since 2005, and the Interim Chair of the Department of Otolaryngology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center prior to the arrival of Dr. Marvin P. Fried.

His awards include the Byers Award for the best clinical research from the American Head and Neck Society in 2003, the Honor Award of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery in 2001, the Recent Alumni Award from the University of Vermont College of Medicine in 2000, and a combined academic and athletic scholarship from the town of Ridgefield CT from 1980-1984 for Undergraduate Studies at Middlebury College. He has also received the Teacher of the Year award from the Department of Otolaryngology in 1997, 1998, 1999, and 2003. He has been listed in the Best Doctors in America; Best Doctors in New York (Castle Connolly Medical LTD), and Top Doctor: New York Metro Area (Consumers Guide to Top Doctors).

He has served on numerous regional and national society committees and boards. He has been the Chair of the Residents and Fellows in Training Committee and the Young Physicians Committee for the Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, as well as serving on their Board of Directors and several educational committees. He has served on the Executive Committee of the New York Head and Neck Society since 2000. He is an active member of 11 societies, serving on many committees within these organizations. He also serves as the Chair of the Cancer Committee at Montefiore, is on the Executive Committee for Translational Research in the Albert Einstein Cancer Center, as well as other hospital and cancer center committees.

Dr. Smith is a reviewer for the Archives of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and Head and Neck.

His research interests are in Head and Neck Oncology. He is involved in translational and basic research in genomic, proteomic, and methylation changes in head and neck cancer, and he is a Co-Director of the Upper Aerodigestive Tract Research group at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He has additional clinical research efforts in swallowing disorders in head and neck cancer patients, particularly following organ preservation therapy, robotic and endscopic surgery for head and neck cancer, and needle aspiration biopsy of thyroid and salivary tumors. He has authored over 50 original reports, reviews, and chapters. He is an Associate Editor for the third edition of The Larynx, edited by Drs. Fried and Ferlito, and is a co-editor for the second edition of Complications in Head and Neck Surgery.
