Vera Gutiérrez-Clellen, PhD, CCC-SLP
Dr. Vera Gutierrez-Clellen is a bilingual speech-language pathologist, professor, and Coordinator of the Bilingual Speech-Language Pathology Certificate in the School of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences at San Diego State University. Dr. Gutiérrez-Clellen's research program focuses on the language development and disorders of bilingual children. She was Co-Principal Investigator of a contract funded by the National Institute of Deafness and Other Communicative Disorders to develop and validate a language test for Latino children speaking non-standard English. The project culminated with the first language test in the field that addresses the cultural and linguistic diversity of Latino children in the U.S. As Principal Investigator, she has completed two language intervention grants for English language learners funded by the Institute of Education Sciences and by a Head Start University Partnership Research Grant. Dr. Gutiérrez-Clellen has provided numerous years of service to national peer review panels for ASHA, the National Institutes of Health, and the United States Department of Education, Office of Special Education. Most recently, she has served as expert consultant for the State of California for the development of infant and toddler foundations, infant and toddler program guidelines, and preschool standards for English Language Learners.
