Overview
Includes 65 cases and 380 images!
Vascular anomalies are encountered in the daily practice of many medical and surgical disciplines, but commonly occur in the head and neck. These disorders of blood vessel development - including hemangiomas and vascular malformations - can be challenging as treatment approaches vary depending on the lesion's clinical characteristics, the disciplines involved, and the experience of the physician.
Head and Neck Vascular Anomalies: A Practical Case-Based Approach offers a focused, multidisciplinary guide to the management of simple and complex vascular lesions based on type and location, with specific treatment suggestions using clinical and scientific evidence. With contributed chapters from international leaders in the field, this text provides consistent and straightforward techniques to treating both frequently encountered as well as less common vascular anomalies.
Initial steps for diagnosis, followed by a recommended treatment approach are illustrated with photographs, imaging, and demonstrations of surgical or alternative therapies. This text is based on current literature and aims to present a timeless algorithm for each lesion type.
Dr. Richter and Dr. Suen have more than 40 years combined experience in treating these lesions. Their Vascular Anomalies Center at Arkansas Children's Hospital was one of the earliest treatment centers for these disorders and is now world-renowned for its clinical expertise and multidisciplinary approach.
Their case-based approach is an efficient resource for physicians in a variety of specialties. With the increasing number of vascular anomaly centers emerging, along with the recent advancements in the field, Head and Neck Vascular Anomalies: A Practical Case-Based Approach is the ideal resource for physicians.

From the Preface
"We designed Head and Neck Vascular Anomalies: A Practical Case-Based Approach' with the goal to provide hands-on, step-by-step, management algorithms for specific vascular anomalies of the head and neck encountered in daily practice. This is a condensed, multidisciplinary, practical guide for both simple and complex lesions. Our colleagues in otolaryngology, dermatology, pediatric surgery, plastic surgery, oncology, and interventional radiology have all contributed amazing cases with clinical detail, scientific evidence, and therapeutic options.
In each chapter, the initial steps to diagnose a vascular lesion are followed by a recommended treatment in a case-based format with photographs, radiographic imaging, and alternative therapies. All cases are based upon current literature with the aim to give state-of-the-art information on the majority of head and neck vascular anomalies. Medical, radiographic, and surgical techniques for frequently encountered and more difficult vascular anomalies are described."

Reviews
Courtney Erin Morgan, MD, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Doody's Review Service (July 2015):
"...The audience includes any clinician taking care of patients with vascular anomalies of the head and neck. It is detailed enough for specialists such as otolaryngologists, dermatologists, pediatric surgeons, plastics surgeons, vascular surgeons, oncologists, and interventional radiologists, but it also would be helpful as a reference for clinicians in other fields who may encounter these patients...[Dr. Gresham T. Richter and Dr. James Y. Suen] bring an incredible amount of knowledge on the spectrum of disease presentation to this book...
This is an invaluable book for any clinician who encounters patients with vascular anomalies of the head and neck. The case-based format provides a clear and concise presentation of the treatment and management. Though it is descriptive enough for clinicians specializing in treating these patients, the book's clear and precise style would enable clinicians of many different specialties to care for them. 4 Stars!"Miles Bannister and Kim Ah-See, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, UK, Journal of Laryngology and Otology (July 2015):
"This is an exhaustive text covering the complex area of vascular anomalies in the head and neck region. It discusses their clinical features, with strategies for making the correct diagnosis, appropriate investigations with useful lists of differential diagnoses and is particularly detailed regarding their individual management.
These descriptions centre on theoretical 'typical' case discussions, which are readily applicable to such cases that are seen in clinical practice. The fact that these are so uncommon makes this particularly useful. These discussions are highlighted by excellent, and often startling, clinical photographs of the different anomalies of different parts of the region. Radiological images and pictures of the upper airway are also included. Chapters cover manifestations on the skin, oral cavity, orbit, deep neck spaces and airway...
The book would certainly be of benefit as a reference text in large paediatric centres and for those developing a specialist service in the care of vascular malformations or who work in a variety of medical specialties, including oral-maxillofacial and plastic surgery. It is certainly a worthwhile read for those wishing to refresh their knowledge of these malformations and their associated conditions and syndromes."James O'Hara, Consultant Head and Neck Surgeon, Newscastle, UK, ENT and Audiology News (July/August 2016):
"The clinical pictures are very good and the overall layout and print quality excellent. This is a first rate reference book. I would wholeheartedly recommend this to any specialist ENT department who treats vascular anomalies. These are complex conditions requiring multidisciplinary working. This text will be a valuable aid indeed."Karen Y. Choi, MD, Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology, Vol 125(3) 264 (March 2016):
"This text is a useful resource for physicians in all fields and at all levels of training. The cases are well presented, and the flow of each case study is extremely readable while still providing a comprehensive overview of each topic. The high-quality illustrations are well organized and a critical adjunct to the text, expertly representing the lesion discussed and thereby enhancing the reader's understanding of the presentation/postoperative appearances of the lesions. Furthermore, each case study is succinctly summarized in a bulleted list, which allows the reader to hone in on the major key points for each case. This text also provides extensive references, not just from otolaryngology journals but also from plastics, pediatrics, and dermatology journals, highlighting the multidisciplinary approach for many of the head and neck vascular anomalies. This text will [be] useful for pediatric otolaryngologists, pediatricians, and other physicians who encounter vascular anomalies in their practice."Arun K. Gosain, M.D., Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Volume 137, Issue 5 (May 2016):
"The case-based style makes for an easy read, yet the surgical approaches are explained in adequate detail to easily reproduce the technical aspects of any recommended surgical intervention. Preoperative and postoperative photographs are included for nearly all cases of surgical intervention. After each case, the authors provide a comprehensive list of medical and surgical options and a summary list of key take-home points. Unlike a traditional textbook, these cases can be reviewed quickly to provide a reliable treatment framework for nearly any patient with a head and neck vascular anomaly. . . . I recommend this book as a must-have for any clinician involved in the care of patients with head and neck vascular anomalies."
