"The "Practical Otology for the Otolaryngologist" and its companion "Practical Neurotology and Skull Base Surgery", are sister textbooks written by eminent Michigan Ear Institute surgeons. The style and format of these books are very similar, and complement each other well, with regards to content. The materials used in both of these books are excellent; the sturdy hardback covers, high GSM glossy full colour pages and pin-sharp image reproduction quality give a superb first impression. They are also reassuringly not enormous volumes, allowing one to believe that they can be actually read, rather than ending up as a geeky doorstop. Special kudos goes to the Michigan team for producing such high quality images throughout these books. "...[A]s indicated in the preface ... this is best suited for ENT, and neurosurgical trainees and practising neurotologists. This is essentially an operative textbook which includes descriptions of the common pathologies encountered with chapters on vestibular schwannoma, NF2 and auditory brainstem implants, lesions of the petrous apex, petroclival tumours, temporal bone malignancy, osseous lesions and finishes with a chapter on stereotactic radiotherapy and cranial nerve monitoring.
There are eleven chapters in total with the first three describing skull base approaches from a neurosurgical and neurologist perspective and minimally invasive endoscopic approaches. Further chapters deal with specific pathologies and appropriate surgical procedures. Each approach is clearly dealt with in concise and unambiguous text and where imaging or intra-operative pictures are shown, they are beautifully reproduced. Overall the textbook is highly comprehensive in describing the possible approaches in detail along with helpful insights... I found the textbook well written, comprehensive and a valuable addition... At $175 it represents reasonable value for money."

About The Editor
Seilesh Babu, MD, is currently in practice and a partner at the prestigious Michigan Ear Institute (MEI) in Farmington Hills and Novi, Michigan, with a large clinical and surgical practice. He completed his fellowship in otology, neurotology, and skull base surgery at MEI after finishing his ENT residency at Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Michigan. Dr. Babu practices the full scope of otology and skull base diseases, including hearing loss, dizziness, facial nerve problems, and skull base tumors in pediatrics as well as adults. He has an interest in implantable devices, quality of life issues with skull base tumors, and eustachian tube evaluation and surgical treatments. He is board certified in neurotology and skull base surgery as well as otolaryngology and head and neck surgery.
