Overview

Written by recognized international experts, Laryngeal and Tracheobronchial Stenosis provides practicing professionals with an up-to-date, accessible reference text for managing stenosis of the larynx, trachea, or bronchi.

The editors have treated a significant number of patients with this condition and have collected objective and scientifically validated outcome measures, thus establishing a balanced and scientific approach to literature review and the material presented. This text aims to provide guidance, based upon a body of evidence, to enable readers to make informed decisions on management options.

Laryngeal and Tracheobronchial Stenosis covers new topics applicable to all populations, such as:

  • Objective outcomes assessment - a new field that has largely developed through the editors' efforts
  • The worldwide shift in a surgical emphasis toward endoscopic and office-based procedures
  • The development of new tracheal replacement techniques
  • New diseases that have emerged and disease management
  • Clinically-accessible, significant background bodies of knowledge on histopathology and physiology

Reviews

  • Kamaal Khan, MBBS, MRCSEd, DOHNS, FRCS, Consultant ENT, UK, The Journal of Laryngology & Otology (June 2016):
"...Laryngeal and Tracheobronchial Stenosis is an excellent resource covering a very important aspect of laryngology. Editors Guri Sandhu and Reza Nouraei, who both work at The National Centre for Airway Reconstruction in London, have done a commendable job. They have managed to bring together a group of experts in this field and have produced a comprehensive guide covering all aspects of the disease. There are thirty well-written chapters. The text is complimented by easy to read graphs, charts and colour photographs. I would consider it an atlas of airway reconstruction. The book starts with the history of airway surgery and then goes on to describe anatomy and physiology of the larynx and trachea. Guri and Reza have written the chapter on pathophysiology of laryngotracheal stenosis. They have presented their experience of modern laryngotracheal case mix at their centre..."

  • Alexander Gelbard, MD, Nashville, TN, Head & Neck (February 23, 2017):
"This book fills an intellectual void with its comprehensive and in-depth review of airway anatomy, physiology, and pathology. Uniquely, many of the concepts discussed are supported by an integrated series of prospective cohort studies performed by the editors, aimed at refining our understanding of the central mechanisms of adult airway stenosis. Beyond pathophysiology, the exceptional cohort of patients managed at The National Centre for Airway Reconstruction in London has allowed the authors to delineate objective, validated outcome measures, which will serve to propel the discipline of airway surgery exponentially forward. This text aims to provide guidance, based upon a body of evidence, to enable readers to make informed decisions on management options. It is comprehensive in nature not only discussing intubation injury, but also the myriad of inflammatory disorders affecting the larynx and trachea. It also has excellent chapters on laryngeal trauma, the management of airway foreign bodies, and anesthesia technique. It includes practical descriptions of equipment and personnel necessary for an effective airway management team. ''Laryngeal and Tracheobronchial Stenosis'' covers the technical aspects of endoscopic and traditional open reconstructive therapy with equal expertise. The text concludes with an excellent summary of the status of tracheal transplantation and tissue regeneration techniques. The strengths of this book are its comprehensive content, thorough references, and easy-to-read text. Overall, there are 30 well-written chapters, complimented by easy-to-read graphs, color photographs, and detailed illustrations of the surgical techniques described. I would consider it an essential atlas of airway reconstruction. Dr. Sandhu and Dr. Nouraei have provided airway surgeons with a unique scholarly contribution. ''Laryngeal and Tracheobronchial Stenosis'' provides practicing professionals with an up-to-date accessible reference text for managing stenosis of the larynx, trachea, or bronchi. The editor’s clarity and enthusiasm will certainly impel the reader to participate in this exciting and rapidly evolving field. It should be part of the library of all airway surgeons and available in all otolaryngology – head and neck surgery and thoracic surgery training programs."
